June 1, 2011, Google announced the launch of their much anticipated Google +1 button. This is a huge step towards adding the social networking aspects search results, something that the underdog Alexa has used to increase their ranking and statistics. Google +1 however isn’t a client side program but a server side piece of code that relies on visitors choosing to +1 your site or content much like a Facbook ‘like’ button. In other words, it’s good and could potentially increase your popularity with Google and perhaps your page rank. Of course Google wouldn’t tell you that though.

Before you decide to add the Google +1 button to your website, you might be asking yourself , ok why do I want to do this? Here are two reasons that Google provides.

How does +1 affect search results?
Obviously, Google +1 is a powerful tool for website owners. +1 helps people discover relevant content—a website, a Google search result, or an ad—from the people they already know and trust. Adding the +1 button to your pages lets users recommend your content, knowing that their friends and contacts will see their recommendation when it’s most relevant—in the context of Google search results.

When a signed-in Google user is searching, your Google search result snippet may be annotated with the names of the user’s connections who’ve +1′d your page. If none of a user’s connections has +1′d your page, your snippet may display the aggregate number of +1′s your page has received.

Does +1 affect my site’s performance in search?
Content recommended by friends and acquaintances is often more relevant than content from strangers. For example, a movie review from an expert is useful, but a movie review from a friend who shares your tastes can be even better. Because of this, +1’s from friends and contacts can be a useful signal to Google when determining the relevance of your page to a user’s query. This is just one of many signals Google may use to determine a page’s relevance and ranking, and we’re constantly tweaking and improving our algorithm to improve overall search quality. For +1′s, as with any new ranking signal, we’ll be starting carefully and learning how those signals affect search quality.

Ok, so I have this annoying woman who rents the basement where I live. When she moved in, BEFORE she moved in, she was told that upstairs in private and likes to be left alone. Anyway, after moving in, she decided this was not going to work for her as she is a ‘social person’. Yeah! Well we are social people too, but not to the point where we want our privacy invaded and be pestered every five minutes by a woman who is lazy, selfish and manipulative (you know…the type who is always working some sort of angle), who constantly texts and phones my iPhone whenever she feels like, even though she has been politely and not so politely asked not too. Serious, she has sometimes called at 2am to say she is doing landry….

As I have an iPhone, I assumed there would be some service or feature that would allow me to block her unwanted calls because changing my number was not a practical alternative, but surprised as I was, my mobile carrier had nothing (In fact, they wouldn’t even deactivate my voicemail as it’s part of the ‘plan’), so I did some research and found that there was a program called MCleaner that would block this pest for me that was available through Cydia if I jailbreaked my phone.

Ok, I thought. I did jailbreak my iPad so did the same to my iPhone and installed MCleaner thinking I was very clever for finding a solution to my problem, except MCleaner does not work properly onOS 4.3.3 and it crashed and would resping into Safe Mode all the time. Ok I thouhgt. That is not going to work.

So restoring my iPhone back to it’s iTunes/App Store prison, I did some digging around on my phone and came up with an idea that essentially is sorta blocking my unwanted calls and SMS’s by using a silent ringtone and creating a ‘Blocked’ contact.

Here’s how:

1) I created a contact on my iPhone called ‘Blocked’

2) I added all the contact numbers for the person above

3) set the SMS notification to None

4) Downloaded this ringtone which is complete silence

5) Added the ringtone to my iTunes ringtone library

6) Clicked on my iPhone and clicked the ringtones tab. I selected my silence ring tone and clicked sync

7) Once the sync was complete, I accessed the Blocked contact and set the ring tone to silence.

After this was done, I also added some other unwanted numbers such as my bank and cable service provider that constantly call to sell me something. Now, I don’t even hear the phone ring, or hear the SMS alert for these numbers which does not interfere with my fabulous people contacts, plus if I see a text from Blocked or a voicemail from Blocked. I just delete it without reading or listening to it having no idea which one of my Blocked numbers it actually is.

ok, I know it’s not really blocking unwanted callers, but so far it’s worked enough for me and my anxiety level has returned to almost normal
